ReviewQuorn Peppered SteaksJun 20, '08 4:32 PM
for everyone
Category:Other
These looked like good healthy value for money at the supermarket and I tried them out last night and tonight. They bake from frozen in about 10 minutes. The first one I overdid and was burnt shoeleather, the second was just right and like
unburnt shoeleather. They were only about half a centimetre thick, soft and tasteless. Even a quarter of a bottle of Tabasco did nothing. I can't imagine who buys this rubbish more than once and I'm still ravenous now and can think of nothing but pizza and Chinese takeaway now. In fact I'm going to order the latter right away.

OH dang...I hate those things. I never trust them. They look really nice on the picture but when you cook them, they are so shrivelled up and hard! Hope you find a good Chinese take away Giles - oh I am getting hungry.

My ex is a vegi and on occaision would use quorn products. Naturaly I tried some from time to time. I understand now why so many vegies are miserable!

The quorn sausages were OK. there's one which delivers great meals. I'll post a picture on foodgasms for you.

Real veg etc is fine. Tofu is OK. This reconstituted stuff is really depressing because it never really lives up to the beauty and deliciousness of real meat.

Hey Giles - have you ever tried instant Mee Goreng? They are a good staple to have in the pantry as they are yummy and really quick to cook. You could do with one now.

Mi Goreng 2

I saw them in Tescos once - in the Oriental section. You can get a box of it in China Town. Paul carried one box on the train from work all the way to Aylesbury hahahahaha for me!

The girls love it :)

hmmmmmm I've been veg for about nine years....I really like the quorn products...never have tried these yet. ...but if you are comparing to meat and expecting the taste of steak...there is probably a taste issue

For calorific and nutritional value, you'd be better off eating the box it came in.
Probably taste nicer too.

.....but then my idea of a good vegetarian meal is a root beer float for dinner

There's a texture-chewiness issue as well.

I doubt you could yell the difference with your eyes shut.

They look great on the photo. I should have taken a picture myself--they just look like leather shoe insoles in reality.

Here's a big hint about beef. It continues to cook after you stop cooking it. You have to undercook it slightly and then let it rest for 3 minutes (approx) I'm still perfecting this but that means I go slightly too much med rare and then let it cook a little more med rare as it rests.

We let roast beef rest before carving. I didn't realise you had to do the same with steak as well.

LOL...still ravenous. Actually that is quite funny. I hate buying stuff like this. I like to buy all of my food fresh. I just let my husband have his once per year KFC and ughhhhh.....yuck...I hate that stuff.

Better luck next time.

If you try it, try stir frying the noodles after you mix all the sauces in. I find that it is tastier. In the instruction section, they just tell you to put the noodles in a bowl (after boiling it for a couple of minutes) and put all the seasonings and mix but for me, I do the extra stir frying. Just put it in the pot that you boiled the noodles in (minus water) just fry it for a minute - stirring constantly so it doesn't stick on the botton of the pan. Then you can eat it as it is or put all the other fancy stuff like egg etc.

Now why do they go and make something that should be wheat free full of grains? grrrrrrr I'm allergic to grain, but by the sounds of it...I wouldn't want to try this either. I'll stick with the real beef...giggles!

My rating is not for your article, but for the product...right? I say NO to anything that's not all natural. Steak should be real beef and none of that mystery meat stuff! :p

A dietitician told me too that they are FULL of preservatives!! Stay out of the frozen food section!!

haha Giles, I love all the handy little hints one can get from your posts and subsequent comments.

I dislike ready made stuff as you never know what evil additives they've chucked into the mix. They also seem to have an unnatural amount of salt and sugar not to mention the hydrogenated fats.
And I have to say that Quorn does not tempt me in the slightest (the TV ad is pretty off-putting, as well!)

Now if you'd had REAL shoeleather, I might have been jealous! (am just off to heat up the remains of yesterday's pork casserole and boiled rice)
