Blog EntryThe Orange PeelerJan 23, '08 7:56 AM
for everyone

I hate peeling oranges. I've never been able to do that continuous spiral thing so I usually peel down in segments with a knife, ideally getting just beneath the pith, and then using my fingers to get the skin off. Somehow though ideally never happens, and I end up with juice squirting into my eye or onto my just washed shirt, and with bits of skin stiking to the orange so that the segments end up tearing into messy shreds. I bought this orange peeler thinking it would do the job. You hook your index or ring finger through the ring and pull the carefully measured spike down the length of the orange instead. Well, it's no better than using a knife because if the orange skin is thin in parts you just end up piercing the edible bit as usual. The only advantage is a psychological one because you can delude yourself before you start that it's going to work perfectly this time. Now I just get loose-skinned clementines and satsumas instead.

That's about all the enthusiasm I can muster for this one folks. If you have any tips on how to make this one work better, let me know.

Yeah, I found the same thing out when I bought ours. I was so proud of it, I thought it was going to solve all our problems. The only problem I found was that not all skins are the same depth. LOL

Well, it's a cute gadget. I'm a clementine gal too. Aren't they wonderful?

I'm with you on this one........stick to satsumas and clementines. They taste better, too.

*smile* Sorry, Giles. No tips for this one. I cut the thing in the middle with knife and peel the skin with my fingers. The deluding oneself is funny though... isn't that what gadgets are about? ;-)

I don't know how to do it but my Mum peels oranges beautifully! I will have to ask her to show me the trick when I get home. Those peeler things never work for me either. I do have a gadget that I like - its this spoon thing that you use to get the all th edible bits out of the kiwi fruit without messing about with it. Its cool!

Giles try a well made vegetable peeler.. What u have here looks like something used to just get the zest off in tiny strips to add to fancy drinks.. you could also try a small sharp paring knife that works as well. Forget what u bought it looks like it would break in the long run.

You know I have a way that I do oranges..I refuse to peel them, I almost peel them like a potato..and slice them up in segments. It works wonderful and less mess...and of course the smell is so wonderful.

Sorry Gilesy... can't help you with this one. The only thing I do with oranges is juice them. :)

I don't "do" gadgets Giles....lol...but easiest way I have found to peel an orange: Slice the orange into circles, then half the circles...........you find the skin comes away easily, with a serated knife. Hope you can follow my explanation.

I like the big naval oranges with lots of the white stuff, you take your knife and cut a triangle at the top and then use your thumbs to pry the rest. You can cut lines and then pull along the lines from top to bottom..or the little butt end where it all comes together. I don't know the proper name for it.

My high school US History teacher, Mr. Ruetsch, was famous for peeling oranges. He claimed to be able to peel any orange, no matter how thin, thick, or stubborn the skin, in one continuous piece using only his hands...all in 45 seconds or less. Therefore, throughout the years students brought him also sorts of challenging oranges. To my knowlegde, he never failed. So what I think you need is to find this guy and hire him to do all of your orange peeling! :)

lol giles, i found the orange peeler quite cute, much better than usual snails ;p
when it comes to your problem with peeling oranges, it's for sure a shared one.

anyhow, it's one of the problems in life one can easily live with :)
mindsnomad wrote on Jan 23
I do what Citybreezes does. if I want cut oranges. For keeping them whole, I do what Tlhouston does with a little difference, I dont cut out a triangle but make a small cut just below "its button" so that my fingers have something to start with. I like the smell of orange leaves on my hands when I peel so I prefer no gadgets. If you get clementines from spain, do try them, living here in the US, those are the sweetest I have eaten so far.

You should think about getting tangelos. They're easier to peel, too.

Just call me when you get this many oranges peeled after trying all the methods....this many oranges you're going to need help eating....oh and save the peels I have this delicious candy recipe uses them.

Sorry...no help here. I once had a straight-edge type orange peeler that worked okay. Perhaps a Juicer would solve the peeling problems.

Gadgets, gadgets... many of them are useless... I don't peel oranges... I buy the juice freshly squeezed.

Wish you a wonderful day!

I might even throw in some rolled oats and turn it into breakfast muesli.

If you add oats to yours Rashmi, you'll end up with Bircher muesli. Odd, I was just swapping recipes with Fatos along the same lines.

I've got one of those gadgets and I find it works reasonably well. but I love blood oranges (Spanish are best, I think) and they usually have thin skins. I don't really mind the mess if it's a sharp and juicy orange....though invariably it gets on my clothes (I always wear light tops when I spill curry, as well!) The only thing for it, Giles, is to get yourself a gentleman's gentleman!

The store was giving away these little things that resembled pencils, with a thin piece of plastic surrounded by two flat pieces so it wouldn't pierce the good parts. It looked like this, head on, and on it's side --> |-|

It worked reasonably well, until I lost it. I just use my hands. I can peel it without piercing the membrane on the juicy parts without any fancy tools.

I have to dig a small hole in with my front teeth before getting my thumbs under the skin.

. Well you got a few choices here now Giles........

A very little, very elderly lady told me, when I was just a child, that the best way to consume an orange was to: Wash it. Roll it and squeeze it between your hands. Cut a tiny circle in the skin ... all the way through to the orange. Suck it.

Given that I was about 4 at the time and she was in her 90s, neither one of us found anything remotely funny in her last two words ...

Or-ange you glad you brought the subject up? (Sorry, the only jokes I know are old ones.)

Ive never tried it with oats giles but it may be good, or granola. YW , mindsnomad, your way sounds good too.

I just make 4 slices top to bottom, cut the top, and then peel them, works good, but you're right, sometimes one gets those thin skinned oranges... then it's a pain to try to peel... Then I cut them in half and use a grapefruit spoon...
