Blog EntryThe J Pull Can OpenerNov 26, '07 3:57 PM
for everyone

This is probably my best gadget buy ever. I was sceptical when I first saw it, but had broken off so many ring pulls using my fingers alone, usually with no other can opener to hand, that I decided to fling caution to the winds and go for it. At £1.99 it's been my best buy ever. The curve on the J has been designed at just the right angle to hook under the ringpull. It's important not to rotate the ring around on its rivets before inserting the tip of the opener. Once it's under the ring, pull back very gently on the handle and up it comes with a little hiss as the vacuum in the can fills with air. Unlike those annoying individual containers of ketchup you get at fast food outlets, you don't get the contents spitting out when the lid first opens, but I always turn the ringpull end of the can away from me just in case.

Score:

Interesting piece Giles. Where can they be bought, would be a good thing for my dear old Ma.

~chuckle~ .. only you Giles!! ...personally I just slide a knife under the ring and lift ... this method is used to prevent broken nails!!

Wow thats very nice,I usually have problem with opening them, this one makes it easier I'm sure. Have a nice evening. What about the heater system?

Just about anywhere, Jim. Lakeland, John Lewis.

This is even better than a knife, Lynne. I've done the knife trick and there's always that moment of anxiety when the ringpull looks about to snap off.

Still no heating, Fatos, thanks for asking, but it's much warmer now and so bearable.

Never saw one of those before. I do the same as Lynne, slide the knife under and lift lol

So sorry to hear that, Gina. Sounds like you're about to have arthroscopic surgery. Best wishes for a speedy recovery.

I like the looks of that gadget, ive broke the rings on the lids lots of times then thought i was gonna cut my finger off trying to get it open , so that looks like a big help!

LOL...I see a heading like this and think "what is Giles up to now"...LOL. You're so cute sometimes....LOL. This looks great....but have never seen one here.

I've never seen one either. Interesting. I don't have the broken pull top problem. Must be my ratio of pull tops to zip off tabs is different from yours (I live out of the freezer,LOL)

Looks quite a large gadget Giles, or is it the angle of picture? as long as it does the job required I suppose it does not matter...........
gilesy01 wrote on Nov 26, '07
That one looks big, but they're actually quite small and delicate.

Oh now that looks cool. I can't tell you how many nails I've broken trying to do that. I've tried using butter knives, but that only works for me half the time.

I don't buy that many products that come in a can . . . the occasional can of Dole pineapple or mandarin oranges. But then if I have trouble I just use by handy-dandy can opener.

You really like gadgets dontcha?? LOL

What a nifty gadget and I can see it being good for arthritic hands too. Great find.

I noticed that all sorts of things are having those pull tab thingies on top now, soup cans, cat food cans, etc. With this pop-top craze I think the can-opener industry is going to be suffering.

Might be asking Santa for this little gadget in my stocking! :)

Umm... interesting. 1.99 sterling, eh? Best buy indeed. Not sure if I can find it here, though...

I've just noticed the 5 stars - no idea it can be done in a blog... umm... how did you do it?

You're quite the gadget man, aren't you? I wonder if you could get something like that in the States somewhere? I could recommend it to many of my patients with arthritis!
