Blog EntryThe "Perfect" Egg TimerNov 4, '07 3:42 AM
for everyone
Would you like one of these gadgets?

Time to show you all one of my other gadgets. I like my eggs boiled with the whole yolk runny in the middle. Somehow I could never get it right. Then I saw this timer in a local shop and went for it. That was a few years ago. I've boiled dozens of eggs with it and not one has turned out right. For starters the instructions don't tell you whether to start with cold or hot water. Should the eggs be straight out of the fridge or at room temperature? Once you start boiling, it's hard to see the colour change in the gloom of the saucepan, even with the hob light switched on. A few rounds in the dishwasher and through detergent and the letters become completely impossible to see. I've given up but it does a great job as a paper weight.

I thought that was pretty funny! Who invents this stuff anyway? People with too much time on their hands I guess. Better to use that time to write correct instructions lol

~Chuckle~ .. Only you!!! My boiled eggs are pretty runny ... I throw the egg from the fridge into a pot of water, bring to the boil, then turn off ... I let it stand in the water while I prepare my slice of toast ... and so far ... I have always enjoyed a nice soft, runny egg! ~grin~

Its the same as my 'recipe'!! She is just a little more scientific with her instructions! ~chuckle~

Although perfectly cooked .. mine do crack, but it just makes peeling them easier! ~grin~

LOL. Eggs won't crack if you do allow them to sit a bit to room temperature. I just use the clock Giles....LOL. Hmmm...runny in the middle sitting in the little old egg cup and dipping your toast in eh. I used to love them that way myself....LOL.

I give the middles to the dogs or cats anyway. As long as the white part isn't too rubbery, I'm good. Once upon a time I had this little egg cooker machine that supposedly timed eggs perfectly, should you want them soft or hard boiled. I only used the hard setting, so I don't know if it worked and left runnier yolks when set on soft.

Yeah, it's true! The eggs won't crack if you keep them at room teperature for a while. If you wanna get them right as you want, you gotta watch the clock after the water (with the egg in it) starts to boil, and after exactly four minutes you must take'em off! They're ready! Bon appetit! :-)

I have one and use it. I, too, have struggled with the viewing. What I would do was lift it out occasionally to see if it was ready yet. Works for me.

I have never tossed it in the dishwasher, figuring the boiling water it is going into is sanitation enough.

Or I just do what Lynne does. Its funny how that is!

i think it's kind of cool. I wouldn't use it for hardboiled stages, as I have a perfect system for that. But soft boiled for toast..would really like that. But, the problem is I always lose gadgets though...

I like to slice of the top with a brisk thwack of the knife, which is a challenge on itself. Then I sprinkle salt and pepper over the top and just eat it with a spoon, popping the toast into my mouth afterwards. Each mouthful must be preceded by the application of more salt and pepper.

I've tried the microwave egg cookers and poachers and the normal ones...all useless.

The viewing is a pain even with the hob light on isn't it Lihsa? Each time I peer into the depths, my head casts a shadow and makes it more like deep sea cave diving than anything else.

I have one drawer in the kitchen just for gadgets, string etc etc.

LOL.....Too funny. I can imagine you sitting there precisely eating your egg. My Mom always used to cut mt toast into fingers so that I could "dip". LOL.

Ive never seen one of those before i love boiled eggs with butter and salt and pepper they are really good! I always have to check one before removeing the whole pot from the stove to see if its cooked long enough or not enough its really hard to get them just right.

There is a rumour that Prince Charles' staff cook his breakfast eggs twenty at a time, each for a different length of time and throw away all the ones which don't make the grade.

"I like my eggs boiled with the whole yolk runny in the middle." So do I. 8 minutes in boiling water is usually perferct, at least for Norwegian eggs, hehe. Try that :)

hey...I need more alternatives to be able to vote!

When it comes to boiling eggs I completely rely on my intuition- The egg will tell me when its done.. and its been perfect always ;) .. you see perfect is being able to accept that no matter how you eat it, its going to get digested. I didnt vote.. nothing about intuition there :P

Now, this one I actually have here and I haven't used it for years... same case - no instruction - no clear sign of how long to do it. Wonder where I put it? Ummm....
