Ten Thought Tuesday

I'm going to have a go at this, now that Glynis has explained what it's about. Hmm...

1. Dorset Cereals muesli is really great; they do a six box variety pack in a reasonably sized helping.

2. I always get this odd queasy feeling in the back of my throat when I eat loads of fibre or an apple on an empty stomach. Anyone else have it?

3. I get that feeling about people sometimes, an uneasiness in their presence which makes me want to go and gargle with something antiseptic.

4. According to dentists I know gargling with Listerine Mouthwash is bad for you and unnecessary.

5. I'm going to add it to my Shelfari list and hope I see it in a charity shop soon.

6.
Edwardians In Colour: The Wonderful World of Albert Kahn

For those of you in the UK with access to BBC iPlayer here's a stunning programme about a French collection of autochrome photographs and film footage made at the beginning of the 20th century. There's interesting personal information about its commissioner, the financier Albert Kahn, fascinating details about French anti-Semitism and then the collection itself. Kahn set out to photograph ways of life around the world which he knew would soon vanish together with ongoing changes of the time. There are beautiful pastel scenes, photographs of people of every social class, and captures of people going about their daily business such as fishing in Finisterre, the lives of women in Ireland and street children smoking. There's a horrific film of a toddler puffing away at a fag end like a seasoned chain smoer of ninety. the programme will be available til 12:49am on Wednesday 27 August unless you download it, in which case it will be there for 30 days.

For those of you outside the UK, here...

The Defrosting Plate

This is a gadget I bought a few year ago, more in disbelief than anything else. It's a black metal plate with grooves in it which you drench briefly in hot water. Then you put your frozen fish, meat, fowl etc on it and wait for it to defrost at room temperature. I used to fool around a microwave but could never work out the correct time to avoid semi-cooking stuff and had to keep checking on it, which seemed like a waste of time. With this gadget you can go away for a couple of hours, sometimes less depending on how warm your room is and what food you're using. You can come back and find your food completely defrosted, raw-looking and ready to be cooked. There are various plate online, some made of copper, which look different. There are articles pooh-poohing it as being a con by people who melt ice cubes on purpose-designed defrosting plates and ordinary metal sheets and say they both melt just as fast. Other people with a knowledge of thermal physics reckon it's something called a h...

Picture Perfect: Look Alike

You know how it is when you get into this PP thing: you carry your camera around photographing anything and everything on the offchance you'll do a blog on it all one day. Well, here are a couple I took at Butlin's Bognor Regis earlier this month, sitting at the Sun and Moon Olde Public House (which, for those of you planning a visit had the best food there) while Oscar climbed all over the outdoor play area next door. I just couldn't decide which one to blog about before, so thanks again to the PP team for this week's theme, because now I can use them both.
British Regional Food

I bought this book in the supermarket as it was going reduced and seemed cheap at the price. The author owns a couple of pricey restaurants and has made a name for himself by specialising in British produce and traditional food. Organic or caught/foraged in the wild is preferred.

The book is divided into chapters based on mainly on the various regions of England with a nod to Wales, Scotland and Ireland in three chapters at the end. At the beginning of each chapter we hear how the author was introduced to the region, which suppliers or chefs he knows there and about trips he has made there, eg to fish, harvest oysters, pick mushrooms. They aren't at all funny, but you get a feel for the countryside of the less known parts of England. You also find out about good places to eat things like eels and tripe.

Many of the people visited are suppliers to his restaurant or to local markets, and Mark Hix works hard to promote their wares, describing in detail how they got into cheese-makin...

Sanctuary Pinot Gris 2007

I bought this wine because it had a nice birdy on the label. It's the Pukeko, a New Zealand wetlands bird which the winery describes as "flamboyant, charismatic, sophisticated and colourful" and therefore a suitable mascot for its products. It also operates in the Pukeko's native habitat and does a lot of conservation and restoration work in the wetlands. There's loads on there about the green methods used. There's an awful lot of webspace devoted to telling us how the label was designed. There's blurb about the wine using all sorts of flowery words.

They could have saved themselves a lot of time and effort because frankly this wine is terrible. It's a funny pinky colour, like blood washing down into a sink from a cut finger when you hold it under a tap. It's really dry and rough, even after being chilled to nearly frozen. There are supposed to be hints of peach, passionfruit, kiwi fruit, honeydew melon, gooseberry, sweet pea and "herbaceousness" in it. All I could taste was that ...

Sicko

I rented this DVD from the local library which I've just joined. There's no way I'd have done my usual amazon rental at five times the price, because I loathed Fahrenheit 9/11. Well, this film was completely different. Still depressing, but what a novel approach to portraying healthcare inequalities between the insured and uninsured in the US and between the healthcare systems of different countries.

Private health insurance happens here as well but is optional for people who want to jump NHS waiting lists or have a private room with flowers and cordon bleu meals. There is always an NHS facility available for people resident here for six months or more and for serious emergencies for those who aren't. No one would turn away a person with a serious emergency on the basis that they couldn't afford treatment, not least because the doctors involved would probably be struck off the General Medical Register and possibly open to criminal prosecution as well. I was amazed to see people, wh...

NHS Out Of Hours and Extended Hours

Some of you in the UK may have read about this Extended Hours thing that's going on in the papers and be wondering what it is, so here's an explanation. Most Primary Care Trusts and GPs have only really just got to grips with it. You need a bit of history first to understand the change.

Until 2003, each GP was contractually responsible for 24 hour care for their registered patients. Clearly being on call 24 hours a day 365 days a year and not being able to take holiday is unworkable, so most GPs ended up forming partnerships with other GPs. They were then able to be on call in rotation, doing say every fourth night and every fourth weekend on call. Some GPs remained in single-handed practice and employed locums to cover for them.

As people get older, have families and therefore responsiblities towards the latter, staying up once a week after a hard day's work and usually the next working day as well becomes physically and emotionally exhausting for everyone concerned. In the 1980s,...

My Name Is Red

I know this book is by a Nobel Prize-winning author (who lectures at Bard College, Dawn) and has won an award itself and that I'm supposed to be bowled over by this book, but it did nothing for me. I've read a coujple of others by the same author which I enjoyed. This one had me stopping frequently to get some fresh air and think about the washing up and ironing.

It's a murder-mystery with romance set in 16th century Turkey. It moved the centre of my usual literary world from Western Europe to Central Asia, which was a change. The Renaissance history covered is interesting. The exploration of how art is perceived by Islam and by Christianity is interesting. The detailed study of Islamic miniature art and Islamic literature is interesting. The way this book was used as a metaphor for the present struggle between Islam and the West is clever.

The book was also repetitive and therefore overly long. I found it hard to stay focussed on whodunwhat from the murder-mystery point of vie...

Meet Dawn

Then I started working through my Inbox. Suddenly I came to this post. I found the film a bit slushy and contrived, but always liked the song, though it's always made me more moody than anything else. This version is sung by one of my online friends who was a professonal singer, and as I listened to it and thought about her recording it I couldn't help smiling. It was the feeling that in spite of being thousands of miles apart I could feel someone in the same room as me pouring her heart out. She never misses or hits a duff note either.

Link

Here's more

Another one
